Instructions for Manually Uninstalling the Athena Pavement LCA

Just because Windows has the "Add/Remove Programs" feature it doesn't mean an application will appear in the list of installed programs. Furthermore, even if it does appear, there is no guarantee that the uninstall feature will work. When you run across one of these situations the items listed below will help in getting rid of the application. Be aware that these steps may not remove everything associated with the application and can impact other applications on the computer. Have a backup or restore point and use caution.

Please note that if you are uninstalling previous versions of the software (renamed to Pavement LCA from Impact Estimator for Highways in July 2015), you should replace all occurrences of "Pavement LCA" with "Impact Estimator for Highways" in the instructions below.

  1. Find the directory for the application and delete all the files in the directory and any related directories. Delete the following directories.
    C:\Program Files\Athena Institute\Pavement LCA
    C:\Users\%YourUserID%\Documents\Athena\Pavement LCA

  2. Launch the Windows Registry Editor.
Windows Start -> Run -> Regedit

  3. The very first thing to do is to Back up your Registry in case any of the changes you are about to make cause system instability.
File -> Export. Give the file a meaningful name.

  4. In the Registry Editor, navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE and find the folder(s) for the application (probably named AthenaPavementLCA, formerly AthenaImpactEstimatorForHighways). Delete the folder. If the program has been installed numerous times, there might be more than one folder to be deleted.

The Pavement LCA registry folder will be in the following sub-folder:
    Athena Institute\Athena Pavement LCA

  5. In the Registry Editor, and navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE and find the folder for the application (probably named AthenaPavementLCA, formerly AthenaImpactEstimatorForHighways). Delete the folder.

You will need to search for the string "C:\Program Files\Athena Institute\Pavement LCA\Athena_PavementLCA.exe" within this registry sub-folder (formerly Athena_IE4H.exe).

Delete all the keys that you find:

  6. Remove the application entry from Add/Remove Programs (if present). In the Registry Editor, navigate to
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall
and find the folder for the application (probably named AthenaImpactEstimatorForHighways). Delete the folder.

You will need to search for the string "Athena Pavement LCA" within this registry sub-folder.

    Repeat this step from HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\

  7. Some applications have Services attached to them. If this is the case, in the Registry Editor navigate to
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services
, locate and delete the service.

You will need to search for the string "C:\Program Files\Athena Institute\Pavement LCA 1.0" within this registry sub-folder.

  8. In Windows Explorer, navigate to the individual user settings and delete program references. Common places to check would be:

    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs and delete relevant entries.

    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup and delete relevant entries.

C:\Documents and Settings\%YourUserID%\Start Menu\Programs and delete relevant entries.
[Do this for each User ID listed]

C:\Documents and Settings\%YourUserID%\Start Menu\Programs\Startup and delete relevant entries.
[Do this for each User ID listed]

If no entries were found in the previous step and the application launches automatically, in the Registry Editor navigate to
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows and delete relevant entries.

  9. In the Registry Editor you will now Back up your Registry.
File -> Export. Give the file a meaningful name.

  10. Reboot your machine.
