Primary Energy – Summary Measure Details
Primary energy is reported in mega-joules (MJ). Embodied primary energy includes all energy, direct and indirect, used to transform or transport raw materials into products and roadways, including inherent energy contained in raw or feedstock materials that are also used as common energy sources. (For example, natural gas used as a raw material in the production of various plastic (polymer) resins.) In addition, the Pavement LCA captures the indirect energy use associated with processing, transporting, converting and delivering fuel and energy and energy plus the operating energy.
Primary Energy includes the following:
- non-renewable fossil fuel consumption
- non-renewable nuclear
- renewable solar/wind/water/geothermal
- renewable biomass
- feedstock fossil
- feedstock biomass
Primary Energy excludes the following:
- electricity
Specifically, in the Absolute Value Energy Consumption Table, Total Primary Energy is the sum of all Energy types:
- Hydro
- Non-Hydro Renewable
- Coal
- Diesel
- Feedstock
- Gasoline
- Heavy Fuel Oil
- LPG (propane)
- Natural Gas
- Nuclear
- Wood
In the Absolute Value Energy Consumption Table, Non-Renewable Energy is the sum of the following Energy types:
- Coal
- Diesel
- Feedstock
- Gasoline
- Heavy Fuel Oil
- LPG (propane)
- Natural Gas
- Nuclear
In the Absolute Value Energy Consumption Table, Fossil Fuel Consumption is the sum of the following Energy types:
- Coal
- Diesel
- Feedstock
- Gasoline
- Heavy Fuel Oil
- LPG (propane)
- Natural Gas
